THE BIG MAP
Charting this out inspired a mix of laughter and panic.
First things first – $$$… need to make sure that we can make rent out there in San Diego. Everyone and their pet has been telling us that it’s really REALLY expensive to live out there.
My response to this has usually been “Oh really? Well that’s a problem” but internally I’ve been saying “This person is completely out of their mind if they think that there COULD be anything more expensive then Boston.”
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are more expensive places to live… like Monte Carlo, um, the embassy in Iraq, or um the Moon. But really when rent gets this high there’s really not much room for expansion.
Using the internet to validate my beliefs we find that BOOM Cost of Living is the same 0% different and salaries are 5.9% less…
Any way Mariel is flying out there this week for an interview and there’s not much doubt in my mind that she’s going to get about the same result she usually gets and they are going to love her. In anticipation we started to consider HOW THE HECK YOU MOVE YOUR EVERYTHING COAST TO COAST.
And we have no good idea… mind you, we have plenty of ideas, just no good ones.
Here is a smattering of ideas:
Sell our beloved Car and fly out with two cats, two kids, and absolutely none of our possessions in tow.
Sell the car, buy or rent a Van or RV and drive out with the cats and two kids. It’s 3,339 miles and 48 hours worth of traveling time. Daunting.
Rent a trailer to hitch up to the subaru and drive the whole way.
Drive to Virginia, take a train with the car down to florida and drive the rest of the way from there.
Sell the car and take a train across country to soak up the scenery.
[turns out you can’t take cats on trains because human rights activists lobbied to get animals banned from trains in like 1979 or something – great job guys]
Sell the Cats, Fly the car out, put the kids on a train and Mariel and I hitchhike out.
Mariel flies out alone with Chase and Dexter, Eddie, Subbie, and I make the drive out.
Egh. We got real tired just thinking about the drive out… here is the map of the trip broken up with pitstops at the places we think we may have friends or family to rest up with along the way.
