Blue Red and Grey, The Who

For our anniversary last year I tried to learn a song sentimental type song. I did not choose wisely, because the song was disproportionately difficult for a guy like me.  It’s nice enough, but the source material is played with a mandolin; and it’s sung incredibly high, and the tempo of the /original/ is wacky so that only feeds my lack of the beats.

Well, I recorded a little video and only showed it to Mariel because it was /rough/. This year I decided to try a little harder at recording it because I had already learned the basics of the song a year ago (and then hadn’t touch it again). So I’m going to try and record it every year and do it at least a little bit better even if it isn’t good enough for the wife – and that’s the metaphor for anniversaries.  🙂

My recording from 2012-11-09:

I have to force myself to keep generating content even if it’s less than perfect.  So here is a practice session of Broken Thumb Blues… which seems less appropriate now that my thumb is just about completely healed.  The kids did their best to add to the ambiance of this track.

This is the first time I tried playing three instruments at once (I know tambourine shouldn’t really count) and although there is a spot or two where my brain was overloaded, and I skipped a beat or two, it should go better with some practice.

Songs, songs and more song. The Teamcornell song cup overfloweth and we need a name… some branding. A product for which we can release any of the songs we create. It’s not going well. Some of the names were of the “kid/family friendly” theme but I’m not sure if we should really limit ourselves to that. If you have any ideas, we’d love to hear them.

Here are some of the front runners:

More Brains than Kids

Wife does little to stomp out my habits… in fact she encourages me all the time. Even though I’ve bought more guitars than I deserve, Santa brought a Ukulele to my quiver. It was (is) surprisingly different from the guitar. About a month ago (half way through January) Wife requested a love song for valentine’s day. There were two quotes that I’ve said in the past that stuck in my head while I tried to write this song:

“You can’t really rock out the ukulele much, can you?”

“Only the Beatles can get away with saying ‘I love you’ that much without being totally lame.”

I don’t think I addressed either of these claims but I /wanted/ to. I hope to some day mix down a proper recording, but this is the “It’s February 14th already!? Oh crap, I need to record something quick” video:

Serious

Lyrics:
Try as it may, and try as it might
The Sun can’t hold a candle to your light

Some days have clouds and some days even rain
But every day I’ve know you, you soothe my pain

It’s that smile of yours, it’s my saving grace
Nothing else will ever take it’s place

I don’t know how you do what you do
but I’m pretty sure the World Revolves around you

I’ll sing it once, sing it twice if I must
Sing three times show you that I’m serious

I love you, I love you, I love you

I’ve known some people and some people have even know me
They’d give me the time of day but nothing else was free

I’m older now and my friends are all (sure) pure
Few and far between but I couldn’t ask for more

Can’t get much higher than the way that you make me feel.
Might be a dream but I don’t care if it’s real.

I’ll sing it once, sing it twice if I must
Sing it all day till I’m delirious

I love you, I love you, I love you

The ice can melt and the seas can rise and
I don’t give a damn as long as you’re by my side

There’s no dark clouds causing me fear
I’m going to sing about you till the day I disappear

You can bet with my very last breath that
I’ll sing about how I love you to death

I’ll sing it once, sing it twice if I must
Sing it three times to show you that I’m serious

Believe me baby why would I lie
I’ll sing about you till the day I day

Time can fly and the world spin faster around
I know who’s going to keep me on the ground

I’ll sing it once, sing it twice if I must
Sing it all day till I’m delirious

I’ll sing it all day and sing it all night
Sing it till I can bring the blind man sight

I’ll sing it loud and sing it clear
I bet even the deaf man can hear

I’ll sing it once, sing it twice if I must
Sing it all day till I’m delirious

I love you, I love you, I love you

Music is flowing throughout the house the majority of the day and its a good good thing! The boys (all 3 of them) brought tears to my eyes with this melody, so pure and true…
