Sing Song Saturday

If it Hadn’t Been for Love by the Steel Drivers

This was a tough one to record. There were three other songs I had toyed with the idea of recording. After failing to get the kids involved in this week’s recording I settled on this song and could not for the life of me get it done in one take. It’s such a comfortable old one that I didn’t realize that I never play or sing it correctly once all the way through.

Unfortunately when you put all my songs together I guess I sound like a country music artist. I wish to diversify the representation of my repertoire.  This latest entry does not help me in that endeavor.

A few years ago was the the first time we bought more than one piece of ‘art’ at one time that had a unifying theme. It was a group of zenpencil prints and the idea was to let the kids pick what they wanted and the left overs would be for me to hang in the general areas.

We’ve bought books and more prints since and the older kids like to check in on the website for the latest editions. But today we got to meet Gavin in person! I wasn’t going to make the kids wait in line to meet him partially because I don’t like crowds, lines, or waiting. But luckily Mariel forced me to be less stupid and we waited. The kids were all /very/ happy and although I try not to entertain the idolization or imposition that seems to go along with signings… I just enjoyed the hell out of it. And we got a beautiful print to boot!  Before we were even out of the store the kids were all thanking me in a way that makes you realize that your kids never really thank you for anything, with genuine enthusiasm, unless they REALLY mean it.

Well this will not help my already marginal yearly performance review report.

Hammock’ing me sleepy!

I forgot to make a post about the San Diego Maker Faire…

We trucked around and fought the crowds as long as we could. Saw lots of neat stuff and hopefully the kids enjoyed seeing what could be made instead of what could be bought.

Becca shot her video in the wrong aspect ratio so I had to flip it for her.

I talked to my new nephew earlier this week and I informed him that he had ruined everything in the nicest way.

That reminded me of this song!

The drop off traffic at elementary school is a huge mystery to many of the people in all of San Diego. Actually, I only really know of two neighborhoods, UTC and PQ. I assume my specific experience is the same all over the entire world. Lots of people ‘triple parking’; lots of kids opening the doors while cars are moving because their parents are ambiguous in their determinism when it comes to traffic; lots of people just pitching it at the curb at a 45 degree angle towards a fire hydrant and putting the hazards on while they walk in their 1st grader.

I usually have no problems parking… there are times I have to walk further than I’d like to back to my car, but I know how to parallel park because I raised right by parents who knew how to mock a person until they parked correctly.

This morning I found a “too good to be true” spot at the gate, swung it right back into position and was met at the curb by a nice lady letting me know that I couldn’t leave it there because it was a newly formed, unmarked drop off area.

“You can’t leave the car here, we’re trying to make it a drop off area so it’s safer for the kids.”
“Oh? Okay Chase, you’re in charge. You two have to stick together and walk in alone because Dad parked wrong.”
“Oh no sir, it’s not illegal or anything it’s just a new thing we’re doing… ”
“Don’t worry, the kids know I wear a mask when I do illegal stuff; right kids?”
“yes dad”
That was the principle and I probably should have filtered my humor a bit.

Some times I hope my humor translates well so I can feel like part of the tribe. Some times it warms my lonely heart to know it will never.
